Description: |
Dr. Matthew McCarthy, a hospitalist at Weill Cornell Medicine, will give us a talk on the ethical challenges physicians have when dealing with superbugs, drug-resistant bacteria/fungi. Dr. McCarthy has written an op-ed for the New York Times on the topic and has been quoted as well in another New York Times article. Come join us as we seek to answer the ethical question of "Should hospitals report superbugs to the public?" Matt McCarthy is a graduate of Yale and of Harvard Medical School and a New York Times bestselling author. His new book Superbugs explores the history of bacteria and antibiotics, from Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin, to obscure sources of innovative new medicines (often found in soil samples), to the cutting-edge DNA manipulation known as CRISPR, bringing to light how we arrived at this juncture of both incredible breakthrough and extreme vulnerability. |
