The Pre-Health Advising Office in partnership with Columbia University’s Master's Program in Narrative Medicine will offer a Methods in Narrative Medicine workshop series. These Basic Workshops provide an intensive introductory experience to the methods and skills of Narrative Medicine. These intensive workshops will offer rigorous skill-building in narrative competence. Participants will learn effective techniques for attentive listening, adopting others’ perspectives, accurate representation, and reflective reasoning. Sessions will focus on reconceptualizing empathy, narrative ethics, bearing witness, and illness narratives. Professionalism, cultural competence, bioethical competence, interpersonal communication skills, self-reflective practice, and the ability to work with healthcare teams can be strengthened by increasing narrative and cultural competence. You may also include this experience on your application to health professional schools. Requirements to receive your certificate: You must attend all six workshops. You must actively participate in workshop discussions and activities. Bring a notebook and a pen for your in-class writing assignments. Submit the reflection assignment at the end of the seminar series. Workshops are in-person on Tuesdays: 2:30-3:30 PM Workshop dates: 2/ 20, 27, 3/5, 26, 4/2, 9. Please do not register if you cannot participate in the entire series. |
